`Memories` by Elaine England
There is a large old oak tree which graces the landscape in the Suffolk countryside near to where Elaine lives. This tree has guarded the landscape in which it has stood for many years, watching over the passing population, providing shade in the warmth of the summer and shelter during the cold winter months. At this time of year, this handsome oak gives up its golden-green foliage to the warm April showers and Spring sunshine.
Elaine's Artist Book is designed to celebrate this tree and the abundance of life that surrounds it. Her work seeks to evoke nostalgia and explore the memories this quiet, tranquil area beholds. Elaine's creations are organic, spontaneous, and unforced and seek to communicate the cycles of life, the growth of nature and the memories of a passage of time.
Elaine's production method focused on utilising organic plant matter to imprint images onto hand made paper, taking an experimental approach to the layering of stitch and foliage in an abstract manner. The method used to create the pages of the book is called Eco Printing and utilises leaves and flowers to create both colour and shape. Once the collected foliage was arranged onto the paper, it was secured into a 'bundle', steeped in water and then heated for an hour or so before being pressed.
